The “Don’t Choose Extinction” campaign by UNDP, created by Activista and launched in the United States in 2021, positions the brand as a critical advocate for urgent environmental action and sustainability. The campaign’s core proposition emphasizes the irreversible consequences of inaction on climate change, framing extinction as a preventable outcome if humanity chooses a different path. By leveraging the authoritative voice of a global public interest institution, the campaign seeks to impart a sense of responsibility and agency, encouraging viewers to engage with environmental challenges through informed choices. The market strategy engages its audience using a documentary and social experiment format, which grounds the messaging in reality and prompts reflection rather than abstract fear. This approach aims to connect emotionally and intellectually by presenting tangible evidence and scenarios that highlight the stakes of environmental degradation. The campaign’s digital hub, indicated through its website, extends engagement beyond the film itself, offering a platform for further exploration and potential action. The targeting appears broad within the US public but is particularly relevant to socially conscious viewers likely to respond to fact-based storytelling and calls to participatory behavior change. By coupling a serious tone with evidentiary narrative techniques, the campaign effectively appeals to an informed audience capable of influencing broader societal and policy shifts toward sustainability, aligning with UNDP’s role in global development and environmental advocacy.

FORMAT#3 SYMBOLIZE THE PROBLEM — Uses symbols or analogies to represent the problem instead of showing it literally. The campaign title "Don't Choose Extinction," paired with the documentary/social experiment genre and its public service context, signals the use of potent symbolism. Although targeting environmental or climate threats, the central creative device is not a straightforward depiction of the problems, but rather their symbolic personification—likely through visual metaphors, analogies, or representative characters (such as an animal talking about extinction or other allegorical imagery). There’s no narrative arc suggesting an Exemplary Story, nor a direct testimonial or explicit demonstration. Instead, the campaign harnesses attention through dramatic symbolism to personify the environmental crisis, making the stakes emotionally resonant and universal—hallmarks of the SYMBOLIZE THE PROBLEM format.
