Wednesday Releases Thing In New York

In December 2022, Netflix, in collaboration with the ad agency whoisthebaldguy, launched an innovative experiential campaign called "Wednesday Releases Thing In New York" in the United States. This unique activation brought the beloved character Thing from the Wednesday Addams universe directly to the streets of New York City, creating an unexpected and immersive experience for fans and passersby. By physically manifesting the iconic disembodied hand known as Thing, the campaign cleverly bridged the gap between the digital streaming world and real-life interaction, sparking curiosity, delight, and social media buzz among the audience. The campaign ties into the broader TV and Streaming Promos industry, aligning perfectly with Netflix’s positioning as a dynamic and boundary-pushing entertainment platform. It amplified the launch of the TV series "Wednesday," which features the titular character navigating a darkly comedic and thrilling storyline set at Nevermore Academy. The strategic use of experiential marketing allowed Netflix to generate organic engagement and emotional connection by making the show’s lore tangible and shareable, prompting fans to interact with a centerpiece of the series in an unexpected urban environment. This approach not only heightened awareness and anticipation for the series but also reinforced Netflix’s reputation for smart, culturally relevant, and innovative campaigns. By blending surprise with fandom, "Wednesday Releases Thing In New York" effectively showcased how creative event-driven marketing can elevate streaming content promotion beyond traditional advertising, driving both audience loyalty and new viewership in a highly competitive entertainment landscape.

Netflix’s campaign “Wednesday Releases Thing In New York” leverages the cultural cache and visual distinctiveness of the Addams Family character Thing to generate organic surprise and engagement among urban audiences. The brand proposition centers on delivering immersive and unexpected entertainment experiences that extend beyond traditional viewing, reinforcing Netflix’s position as an innovative leader in streaming content that resonates deeply with fans. By physically unleashing Thing in the streets of New York City—a real-world manifestation of a popular fictional character—Netflix blurs the line between fiction and reality, creating memorable moments that amplify viewer connection to the “Wednesday” series. Strategically, the campaign capitalizes on the existing fanbase’s emotional attachment to the character and the broader Addams Family universe, tapping into nostalgia while aligning with the macabre and quirky tone of the narrative. The choice of an experiential medium in a high-footfall urban setting allows for genuine, unscripted interactions that feel authentic and shareable, thereby increasing organic reach through word-of-mouth and social media amplification. The core insight driving this approach is that fans crave immersive experiences that deepen their engagement with beloved IP, particularly when delivered with a deadpan humor consistent with the series’ voice. By targeting New York City’s culturally diverse and media-savvy population, Netflix heightens the relevance and buzz around the show while reinforcing its brand identity as a platform that offers innovative, narrative-driven entertainment experiences beyond the screen.
