Coffee giveaway challenge - Löfbergs | Clapboard Ad Archive
During the annual Staro Riga light festival in 2016, Swedish coffee brand Löfbergs, in partnership with Havas and JCDecaux Latvia, redefined commuter engagement with the Coffee Giveaway Challenge—an activation that transformed three Riga bus shelters into collaborative playgrounds using interactive light sensors and offered festival-goers a chance to earn complimentary coffee. The campaign engineered a live demonstration of Löfbergs’ core brand promise by challenging strangers to work together, requiring all 18 sensor points embedded in the shelters to be touched simultaneously to unlock a coffee sample, fusing technology, sociability, and product trial in a single moment and embodying what Clapboard’s taxonomy identifies as FORMAT#1—Demonstration. In a bold departure from static outdoor placements, Löfbergs and Havas invited passersby to turn wait time into play, prompting spontaneous cooperation and authentic interaction among commuters—delivering a direct, tangible product benefit in real time. The mechanics of the challenge demanded social participation and communal effort, brilliantly aligning with the cultural atmosphere of Staro Riga, where collective experiences are celebrated, while positioning Löfbergs as a catalyst for shared moments. The choice of the bus shelter—a transient, everyday setting—ensured high accessibility and visibility, amplifying both reach and relevance by meeting people where they gather, wait, and often crave comfort, thus heightening the impact of the sampling effort. Throughout the four days of the festival, with coffee packs replenished hourly and sustaining interest across all hours, Löfbergs succeeded in cutting through the noise of brand activations synonymous with public festivals, embedding itself within Latvia’s growing taste for specialty coffee and progressive brand experiences. Unlike traditional product demonstrations, this work demanded active engagement, transparently tying the reward to the collective spirit Löfbergs seeks to foster, and surfacing real proof of concept for both the product and its intended values. The campaign proved a masterclass in leveraging physical space and social mechanics to deliver a live brand promise, with Löfbergs’ agency partnership with Havas showcasing the power of purpose-built experiential interventions in the Food & Drink category. The campaign earns 71/100 in Clapboard’s global creative archive. At a time when interaction and participation are driving the evolution of out-of-home media, this campaign matters for its insistence that meaningful engagement is engineered through the interplay of technology, brand purpose, and communal experience.
