Pedestrians create fun messages for a free Jelly Fizz - Fanta | Clapboard Ad Archive
Fanta’s 2017 Jelly Fizz activation in Australia harnessed the power of participatory street-level marketing with an unapologetically playful edge, positioning the brand alongside the launch of its sensory soft drink innovation in a way that blurred product demonstration with public engagement. Partnering with JCDecaux, Ogilvy & Mather, and UM, Fanta introduced a trio of custom-built fridge Citylights panels strategically embedded in the high-traffic CBD corridors of Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, inviting passing teens and urban consumers to quite literally “shake things up.” The installation hinged on a strikingly simple mechanic: thirty magnetic word tiles affixed to each fridge, waiting for pedestrians to rearrange and compose their own fun messages that captured their voice, mood, or wit. Participants were then prompted to snap a photo of their creation and share it on a dedicated campaign microsite, immediately earning a chilled Jelly Fizz as both product reward and interactive flourish. This mirrored the core product proposition — a soft drink that’s only fully activated through a prescribed physical shake, a novel feature in the non-alcoholic drinks category, which both the communication and the consumer ritual spotlighted. In sidestepping passive sampling in favor of a tactile, self-authored encounter, Fanta tasked its audience with co-creating the brand message, building both digital and physical equity by directly tying the act of shaking to a permission slip for self-expression. What Clapboard’s taxonomy would classify as FORMAT#11—Unique Personality Property, the campaign foregrounded the drink’s interactive demand as both literal instruction and figurative brand challenge, offering a direct invitation to disrupt expectations and forge a personal connection with a new category entrant. The work stood out in a crowded OOH landscape by fusing the product’s unique physical requirement with a live media canvas, and in so doing, delivered against Fanta’s promise of fun, creativity, and youthful energy, while seamlessly bridging the experiential and digital. The campaign earns 72/100 in Clapboard’s global creative archive. The industry should take note that when a product’s quirk becomes the campaign’s creative centerpiece, engagement follows naturally — provided the experience is crafted as boldly as the innovation itself.
