Trump Cards - | Clapboard Ad Archive

Trump Cards is a 2018 student campaign from Miami Ad School that leverages political satire and direct mail to create an incisive commentary on Donald Trump’s presidency within the United States political and advertising landscape. This integrated medium effort stands out by adopting the recognizable cultural format of collectible trading cards, repurposed here to reflect the contentious and often abrasive rhetoric that defined Trump’s public persona during his presidential campaign. The campaign’s central conceit involves returning the volley of insults recorded by The New York Times—282 documented instances of Trump’s verbal attacks—by matching them in kind and delivering these barbed retorts directly to the then-president through physical mail. This choice of channel emphasizes intimacy and confrontation, harnessing the tactile power of direct mail in an era dominated by digital communication, thereby cutting through the noise with a message that is both personal and politically charged. What Clapboard’s taxonomy identifies as FORMAT#12—Parody or Borrowed Format—underpins the creative strategy, using the playful yet pointed metaphor of trading cards to both parody and critique the mechanics of political discourse. The campaign’s English language execution melds rebellion with satire, turning the very tools of celebrity culture and collectible nostalgia into instruments of political activism and engagement. The Trump Cards promo deliberately situates itself within the market category of political commentary and activism advertising, where the boundaries between creative expression and societal critique blur. Miami Ad School’s approach demonstrates how student creativity can intersect meaningfully with real-world events, using advertising formats in unexpected ways to provoke thought and conversation. Clapboard rates this campaign 63/100 in its global creative archive. Trump Cards matters to the industry because it demonstrates how traditional media formats can be reimagined in politically charged contexts to deliver messages with immediacy and emotional impact, signaling the continued relevance of analog tactics in a digital age.

The "Trump Cards" campaign, created by Miami Ad School in 2018, operates as a provocative narrative piece within the political and social commentary space. Although not tied to a traditional commercial brand, the campaign functions as a conceptual brand that positions itself as a form of critical engagement and responsive dialogue with the political climate shaped by Donald Trump's presidency. Its core proposition lies in holding public figures accountable by mirroring the extensive record of insults made by Trump during his campaign, thus signaling a demand for reciprocal transparency and critique in political discourse. The market strategy leverages a timely and culturally resonant insight: the public's awareness of Trump's documented pattern of insults, as cataloged by The New York Times. The campaign capitalizes on this by creating a direct, tangible response that makes the adversarial communication explicit and personal, using a mail-based medium to deliver 282 deliberate insults — one corresponding to each documented insult from Trump. This approach targets politically engaged individuals who are attuned to media narratives around accountability and who appreciate a bold, confrontational tone in political activism. The creative angle — a mailed, physical delivery of retorts — reinforces the campaign’s commitment to directness and confrontation, distinguishing it from digital-only protests and amplifying its symbolic weight as a counter-narrative gesture. By repurposing the original insult list and emphasizing exact parity, the campaign fosters a sense of symmetrical justice, appealing to an audience inclined toward critical reflection on political communication and the responsibilities of leadership.

FORMAT#12 PARODY OR BORROWED FORMAT — Uses or parodies pop culture formats like films, shows, or genres. This campaign, titled 'Trump Cards', employs a creative device that parodies the familiar concept of "trading cards" — specifically tailored to the polarizing figure of Donald Trump and his extensive record of insults. The narrative centers around returning the act (insulting) in kind, playfully mirroring a cultural touchstone (collectible cards) to engage the audience and satirize political discourse. The title, concept, and description ("Trump Cards," "mail-based campaign," "make the president feel bad") signal the playful adaptation of a recognizable pop culture format, creating a parody that references both the persona of Donald Trump (celebrity figure) and the mechanics of collectible card games. Instead of a straightforward narrative or testimonial, it uses the borrowed format as the main creative vehicle, making FORMAT #12 the most fitting choice.
