Don't cut down. Decorate - Geocell | Clapboard Ad Archive

Geocell’s 2016 Christmas campaign Don’t cut down. Decorate, created by Windfor’s, delivers a pointed environmental message beneath the festive gloss of New Year celebrations in Georgia, leveraging the influence of acclaimed musician Katie Melua to anchor both the message and the emotional charge. As a market leader in telecommunications, Geocell uses its platform and partnership with Melua to shift public perception around the widespread custom of felling trees for holiday décor, urging instead for the celebration of natural beauty through conscious alternatives. The agency’s creative deployment of an ongoing celebrity, in what Clapboard’s taxonomy would classify as FORMAT#8—Ongoing Characters or Celebrities, positions the brand narrative within a new cultural context, moving beyond product or service claims to champion social responsibility as an industry concern. Melua’s presence does more than lend recognizability; it strategically reframes the holiday ritual, harnessing her public profile to add authenticity and reach to the campaign’s urgent appeal for environmental awareness. The work is shaped with high production value and artful restraint—meticulous art direction, evocative sound design, and carefully calibrated storytelling combine in a filmic composition that fuses commercial objectives with cause marketing, establishing Geocell not only as a provider of digital connectivity but as a proactive community stakeholder. Through this film campaign, the industrial sector’s concerns about resource preservation are mapped onto a seasonal narrative familiar to Georgian audiences, translating an abstract ecological issue into an emotive call to collective action. The agency's focus on a celebrity-driven motif over more literal or didactic storytelling is a calculated creative decision, using Melua’s stature to drive awareness and behavioral change in a way that standard advertising devices alone could not achieve. As a result, Don’t cut down. Decorate stands as an example of values-based branding, where the effectiveness of the message is inseparable from the creative channel and personality delivering it. The campaign earns 63/100 in Clapboard’s global creative archive. For the category, this campaign underscores how strong celebrity partnerships can propel industrial brands into the sphere of cultural influence, provided the message and messenger are aligned in purpose.
